Richmond
Friends Meeting Workcamp Committee
The Workcamp Committee at Richmond Friends Meeting seeks to act on the Quaker belief that there is that of God in every person. We believe that working cooperatively can put us in touch with that deeper spirit. We seek to do physical work in the spirit of love.
Working along with a homeowner, we may paint, plant or clean up. We believe that working together enhances relationships, which is our deeper mission. We believe that working with others in our community has tremendous potential to reduce misunderstanding and build relationships.
In the early 1990’s the Friends Workcamp Committee initiated it’s relationship with Highland Park Community Commission, then Highland Park Restoration and Preservation Commission. At that time, the workcamp projects were likely to be related to renovation, creating household gardens, and neighborhood cleanup.
Recent
Work in the Highland Park Area of
Richmond
Since spring 2002, the committee has worked with individual homeowners in the Highland Park area who want help with landscaping. This effort has had a side effect of sparking the interest of neighbors, who have asked for advice or assistance. We have worked with two new homeowners per year, frequently first time homeowners who purchased
houses through Highland Park Community Commission.
It is our goal to establish a continuing relationship with the homeowners and encourage their involvement in upcoming projects. In both of the new projects in 2005, people from past projects have participated.
The energy and good spirit exhibited on these workdays has been a source of inspiration for all who are involved in this work.
